Abstract

Among the most controversial subjects in the philosophy of lingustics aestheticism is the debate concerning structure and neaning; and the question of whether the degree of aestheticism found in the eloquence of the Arabic language is due to the structure or the meaning.
Critics in this debate are divided into various groups. Some believe that the degree of aestheticism is due to the structure and others argue that it stems from the meaning. A third group maintain that it is due to both. The latter also believe that both have an equal impact. The fourth group, which in my opinion, have presented the best argument, are those who hold that the degree of aestheticism is related to the onomatopoeia nature of the word.
This issue which calls for comprehensive research has been dealt with extensively in this paper using Quranic examples.
