Abstract

In this article it is argued that different translations of the Quran can reflect the application of different syntactic rules. Different Syntactic rules lead to different interpretations. Such interpretations can be devided into two categories.
1) The application of rules which do not introduce
fundamental changes in meaning.
2) The application of rules which create serious changes in
meaning.
The conclusions reached in this article are:
1) As long as different rules of syntax are applied different
translations are unavoidable.
2) Translation criticism has to consider the fact that translations may vary according to the different syntactic rules applied.
